MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

Responsible for the development of packaging materials of new ice cream innovations and the cost & quality improvement of existing products by delivering the following technical services :

  • Development of new packaging materials & designs by establishing commercially & economically feasible specifications that meet Unilever quality, health & safety standards and sourced sustainably.

  • Continuous improvement of existing packaging to optimize cost & quality, increase its functionality in end to end supply chain and its relevance to consumer needs

  • Generate efficiencies via process simplification and reduction in packaging waste.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Develops new packaging that meets Marketing briefs, as per target timelines, ensuring that all materials comply with the desired quality & cost guidelines, regulatory, health and safety standards.

  • Develops the package from concept to commercialization. Material & design are conceptualized via inspirations from trade visits, Unilever best practices, packaging expositions and packaging trends. Leads prototype development with the package converters and monitors batch trial runs (BTRs) until 5 commercial runs. Responsible for the turnover of standards & specifications to manufacturing ensuring their financial, technical and commercial feasibilities.

  • Conducts package abuse tests and trundling tests to ensure package integrity from end to end supply chain for both local and export products.

  • Determines pallet loading patterns of finished goods via software to optimize cold storage space utilization and minimize product damage.

  • Continuously conducts projects that improves material quality and design to optimize package costs.

  • Encodes Packaging Material Specifications in Unilever’s system, / SAP MDM, ensuring their accuracy, completeness and timeliness.

  • Reviews and approves all mandatory elements as well as technical dimensions of artworks developed in Unilever’s system.

  • Prepares the final artwork of all products for registration with the Philippine FDA, ensuring timeliness of submission to meet launch timetables and TVC Ad break.

  • Contributes as a team member of the Project Management Team, by working closely and proactively in building relationships with the Marketing Project Leader, the Process Engineer & Product Development Executive, the Supply Management Buyer, the QA Manager & Finance Business Partner

  • Benchmarks regionally and globally on packaging to ensure healthy margins, and competitiveness in both quality and costs. Exchanges best practices by networking with RDCs on projects.

  • Keeps abreast of and actively searches for relevant new technologies that may lead to a competitive advantage. Forges and maintains networks with regional teams, and as required, with regional & global suppliers & Unilever RDCs, to be updated on packaging trends and the latest developments.

  • Liaises with the Packaging Network in the region and Supply Management to identify approved suppliers and obtain material samples for testing and evaluation.

  • Maintains high standards of hygiene and housekeeping (GMP & 5S) in the R & D Office & Laboratory, in conjunction with R & D Technicians.

  • Ensures compliance to safety standards in all aspects of the job, including clearance requirements, HACCP analysis & Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date and secure records for all packaging materials and other technical documents. Follows safekeeping and confidentiality guidelines for proprietary packaging materials and processes, trade secrets, and all other R & D technical Information & data.

  • Provides technical advice and support as needed, especially in process optimization & trouble-shooting in Production, and to QA & Supply Management in raw material testing and evaluation

  • Closely liaises with QA, Supply Management & 3rd Party Processors/Suppliers to ensure

harmonized standards and specifications are followed for all packaging materials.

  • Provides technical advice and support as needed, especially in process optimization and trouble-shooting in Production, and to QA and Supply Management in packaging material testing and evaluation.

  • To be updated on plant packaging equipment and facilities and their

process capabilities and limitations.

  • Accountable for safety of self and others and develops and implements safe products and processes.

  • Actively supports and drives the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.

  • Identifies and raises improvement ideas in areas of responsibility.

  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by her/his Line Manager from time to time.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S in Engineering Degree or Related Discipline

  • More than 2 years relevant packaging R&D experience in the food industry preferred

  • Experience in R&D of bakery, sauce, confectionery and/or fruit preserves

  • Experience in establishing process capability studies

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Proactive Mindset

  • Knowledgeable in SAP

  • Passionate & Creative

  • “Can Do” Attitude
